Anatomy of a Double Page Layout | January 2015

Hey everyone! This is Shelly again with this month’s dose of the makings of a double page layout.

The wind and snow have been blowing here in Ohio, which is the perfect time to start a fire and cozy up to my craft table. This month, I chose to let the season around me inspire me. I have been slowly filling in gaps for my son’s past albums. The next stop on my list was the winter of 2011-2012.

I started off with my sketch. I always have lots and lots of pictures when it comes to documenting my season summary pages, so the big block of pictures always works perfectly for these. I sized all of the “indoor-around the house” pictures at 2x3. I stuck with the two larger pictures at 3.5x5 for the “outdoor” fun. Crazy enough, we only had a couple of snow falls during this winter. I was lucky to have actually taken these. The snow melted right after lunch that day!

When it came to choosing papers, I grabbed various blues, a red, and yellow. In the end, you will see that I ended up tossing out the yellow and replaced it with a touch of woodgrain instead. I know it could really be a Fourth of July page, but I loved how bold and cool the colors were together.

I kicked off my page by adhering all of my pictures. I knew I wanted that diagonal blue stripe to be my background next to the block of pictures. Then, it was time to get creative.

I chose a few of the Journaling Cards from the Jubilee Collection. These are not just for your Project Life layouts, but for traditional pages too! I am a big fan of customizing and layering them.

After getting most of my left-side into place, I tackled the right-side; the side that I could really have fun and create with endless possibilities. I know some of you aren’t fans of double-page layouts, so this is where I hope I can inspire you.

I loved the look of the die-cut 3x3 journal card and really wanted to re-create that same look on this side of my layout. After seeing the “Hello,” I knew that it would work perfectly as part of my title. I know that word has been beaten to death in this community, but I still love it!

To create a nice flow of the woodgrain, I layered a couple more in for good measure with my journaling card. I was really going back and forth about how to add a little something extra this side of my page. I played with some extra patterned paper over the red dots, but fell in love with adding some texture tone-on-tone by placing a few enamel dots over the big red polka dots.

I liked how it added just a little extra something, without overpowering the rest of my page. It is always a fine line when you are creating with so many pictures. Even though most of my pictures were on the other side of the layout, they still add extra chaos that you don’t want to compete with.

Motivational Wall Hanging

Hi everyone, Laurel here.  I decided to create and inspiration project to hang above my work desk.  I love quotes and sayings so I chose ones that will help keep me on track for my goals.  My one word for this year is Thrive.  I hope to Thrive in my health, fitness, family and career goals.  We all know that there are times when we need a little push.  I will be using this to jot little notes and such.

I have used the Jubilee Sherbet...Such a lovely blend of colors and patterns, one of my favorites.  Makes me happy because I used a lot of scraps for this too!  Yay me!

 

 

First I cut a bunch of panels at 3 1/2 X 5 1/2 and 3 X 5 then just went about layering them, adding the embellishments, stamps and whatever else would work (and fit, LOL!) 

 

I love layers, stitching and anything else that I can incorporate when making fun projects like this for myself.

 

 

Now I feel like eating some chocolate, so I better get this project up on the wall... need the reminders!

Masculine Card Set

Hi everyone! This is Tonya here today. A couple of days ago I was noticing that my card stash was in need of some cards that were a little more on the masculine side. When I think about manly cards the Jubilee-Tangerine line immediately comes to mind, the colors are perfect and what says ‘man’ more the a trophy head of a buck?!

For this first card I simply took different strips of patterned paper and layered them on the front of the card making sure to slight tilt them a bit. Then it was embellished with a die cut popped up with some foam tape and one of the buck head enamel shapes.

This next card was pretty simple to make. I cut out the letters for ‘you’ and then layered behind the negative space of the ‘o’ with a bunch of enamel dots. I varied the font of the two words to add some visual interest to what is a rather simple card.

This last card was made by layering a trio of 3x4 journal cards. I love the look where a small decorative clothes pin is used to hold a variety of things to the front of a card, but I don’t like the bulk. So, I decided to use a little bit of decorative tape and a brad instead.

I finished off the card with a white arrow rub on, some numbers from the mixed media pack and of course some enamel dots.

 

 

My favorite thing to do lately is to make coordinating envelopes for my cards. It’s such a great way to use up any extra paper you may have on hand. You’ll see a matching envelope for each card in the above photos.

Jewelry Making with Decorative Tapes

 

Hello! It’s Valerie with my first post for 2015. Thanks to My Mind’s Eye I have this amazing collection of decorative tape! I’ve been doing some thinking—thinking of different things to make using this tape. I’ve seen people use it to decorate their walls and furniture, but what about wearing it…as in using it to make jewelry? And then this little endeavor led to creating some embellishments for scrapbooking too.


I have a box of air dry modeling clay that I purchased from my local craft store a couple years ago. It’s a white clay that feels and looks similar to the stuff we used in high school art class and put in the kiln to dry. I usually get it out around Christmas time to make some handmade ornaments with my son.

Yes, I did say I bought this box a couple years ago, and well, this is probably my last project with it—it’s starting to get a little dry. Amazing that it lasted as long as it did! You could also probably use the modeling clay that comes in lots of colors and a much smaller size than my ten pound box of clay.


So here’s my supplies. I raided my son’s play-doh tools and pulled out a rolling pin and a cutting wheel. I’ve also got a paintbrush, a ruler, a paper piercer, some heart shaped cookie cutters, and a scrap piece of cotton canvas cloth. In high school we always worked with our clay on a canvas cloth. I think it was because it was easier to peel the clay off the cloth than a smooth table.

It’s kind of like your floured work surface I guess, and I do like the texture it leaves on the clay. Later on in the post I added gel medium, embossing ink, embossing powder, and a heat gun to my arsenal of supplies, but they didn’t make the photo.

Supplies: My Mind’s Eye Market Street Ashbury Heights decorative tape (pink floral), Lost & Found Record It Antique decorative tape (silver chevron), and Now & The Milo decorative tape (yellow/turquoise floral).

I used two different very basic techniques to create my pendants. I rolled the dough flat like when making sugar cookies and cut it into strips. Then I connected the ends to create the pendant in the photo on the left above.

For the pendants on the right, I rolled the clay out like a snake/worm and cut it down to size. I used a paper piercer to create the hole. The clay, when it’s this thin and small doesn’t take too long to dry. I may have placed it on the heat vents in our house to speed up the process a little.

It definitely shouldn’t take much longer than overnight to dry. First, I used gel medium on the pendant and then applied the tape while the gel medium was still tacky. I applied another layer of gel medium on top of the tape to make sure it was adhered well. I decided to add a little silver and gold with some embossing powder. I simply rolled the pendant or pressed the pendant onto my embossing ink pad and then dipped it into the embossing powder and heated it up with a heat tool.

While I had the clay out I decided to cut a few cute little hearts to use as embellishments for a layout. I used gel medium again to make sure the tape was adhered well. Then, used them on this easy single-photo layout pictured below (I’m still slightly obsessed with all the pretty Necessities vellum paper).

Supplies: My Mind’s Eye Necessities Black & Gray “Stripe” vellum paper. Jubilee Wild Berry “Hey You” Rub-Ons. Now and Then Dorothy “Celebrate” Alpha/Word Stickers. My Mind’s Eye decorative tape Pink & Charcoal collection and Pink & Yellow collection. Other: Bazzill Basics Kraft paper and black ink.

Hugs & Kisses- Valentine's Day Decor

Supplies: Lost & Found - Ruby: Stripes glitter patterned paper, Doily patterned paper, medallion patterned paper, Red Floral patterned paper, sticker sheet, decorative brads, and chipboard; Lush: red flocked chipboard letters; Misc: red paint, mod podge, cream flocked ribbon, wood letters.

 

Sometimes it is a little overwhelming to begin the process of taking down and packing away all of our Christmas decorations.  I discovered that having fun and glittery Valentine's Day decor to take it's place is a great incentive for me.

I had a fabulous set of wood letters that needed to be finished.  I dug into my "scrapbook stash" and pulled out one of my favorite classic collections: "Lost and Found 3 - Ruby".  I love the elegant patterns, glittered papers, and the red, cream, and gray colors.

 

 

First, I spread my papers out and carefully planned the order they would be on my letters. I painted the sides and back with red paint. Next, I flipped my papers over to the back side, turned my wood letters over and placed them on the papers, traced around them, and cut out the papers. 

 

Note: Remember to brush the mod podge on the wood letter, NOT the paper - or it will turn into a warped and gooey mess.  Smooth out any bubbles or ripples and let dry.  Then apply a coat of Mod Podge on top.

 

I covered the tag with cream and red paper.  I glittered chipboard letters in red to spell "HUGS" - then layered them with a scalloped grey doily sticker, chipboard, decorative brad, and velvety red flocked "&" from the classic Lush collection. I tied it to the "K" with flocked cream ribbon.

 

I painted the heart in red, then glittered it with red glitter and attached it to the "i" with a wire.

 

You might have fun digging through your scrapbook stash to find some festive MME papers for Valentine's Day decor. :)

Product Spotlight | Transparent Frames

Hey there, MME fans!  Missy here.  I hope you are all having a great New Year so far.  Today I’m sharing a layout that features some of the Transparent Frames from the Jubilee collections. 

 

There are many ways you can use them, and the gold, silver, white and black colors make them easy to coordinate with any other colors.  Since we are all getting ready for some awesome new releases, I decided to dig into my stash for this one.  I pulled out the Now & Then Milo collection, along with the silver transparent frames from the Jubilee Sherbet collection. 

 

I used them as layering pieces as well as embellishments.  I used two of them behind my photo, and then I cut one up.  The “shapshot” piece above the photo is part of a frame, and so is the silver camera in the lower right corner.  I just hand cut it out.

Here you can see how well they layer in with paper and chipboard.  I even added decorative tape over it.  I love the silver border it gives my photo.  I basically treated it like another piece of patterned paper.

 

 In between all the layers, I added in some thread and watercolored up the background a bit.  I also threw in a few little circles I punched from vellum.

 

Here’s another angle of the top transparent frame.  I just stapled it in place.  I love that you can still see the stitching through it as well as the patterned paper.  It gives a nice subtle touch without blocking everything behind it.  I also layered a button underneath the bigger frame. 

 

This little camera was too cute not to use, so I cut it out just like I would patterned paper.  Very easy to place and embellish on top of it. 

 

Now there are also gold, white and black frames, so you could create so many different looks with all of them.  I found them fun and easy to use.  If you haven’t tried them, I high recommend giving them a shot!
