Mini Albums with Stephanie | March 2014 Edition

Hi everyone! Stephanie back with you to share this month's mini album. I love the new Record It! collections. The journaling kits are perfect for just about any project! Today, I wanted to share a fun way to use those journaling cards to create an accordion mini album.  

Supplies needed:
MME Record It! Just Splendid Journaling Kit
MME Record It! Just Splendid Decorative Tape
White cardstock
Corner rounder
Adhesive
Bone folder


1. Start by gathering your supplies.

As I mentioned, I'm using the Record It! Just Splendid journaling kit as the main base of my album. I will be using the wood veneer cards as the front and back of my book. They are super thick and sturdy and will stand as a great base to the accordion book. I also pulled some of my favorite journaling cards from this pack! The colors are just so fun and happy...you really can't go wrong!



2. Trim two pieces of cardstock to 4x12 inches.  

3. Score your card stock a little larger than 4 inches.  \

Repeat the scoring for the remainder of your trimmed paper. You will have one section on each piece that is a little smaller than 4 inches. You will use these two smaller pieces to connect the strips of paper together.

**Note: Feel free to add in additional strips of paper for a longer accordion album.  There are no rules here!  :)**


4.Using a corner rounder, round your corners to match the corners of the journaling cards. The journaling cards will be covering this section, so don't worry if they don't match up exactly!

5. Adhere your two strips of scored cardstock together.  

Use the two sections that are smaller than 4 inches and try to make the combined section roughly the same as the other sections. Your two pieces of paper will not line up perfectly. That's ok. You will cover this section with either a card or photo, so it will not be seen.


6. Create a cover for your accordion mini book.

I trimmed the journaling card that had a pie chart on it and added it to the back of the wood veneer card.  I love the starburst effect that the circle has peeking out of the open heart!  You can add a different journaling card, a photo or journaling in this section.
 

7. Adhere your cover to the front section of your accordion album.  

I also used the additional wood veneer card included in this pack as a back cover (not pictured). Adhere the back wood veneer as you did for the front.


8. Choose your favorite journaling cards and add them into a few sections of your album.  Save a few places for photos.
 

9.Trim out several sections of the journaling cards.  

These fun sentiments and journaling labels make the perfect embellishments and journaling spots for your photos.
 

10. Print your photos at 3x4 inches and round your corners.

11.  Add your trimmed embellishments and some washi tape for fun pops of color.



12. Fold and enjoy!

Collection Spotlight | Chalk Studio II

Hey there!  Lea here today, and I have a matching card & bookmark to share with you!!  For today's projects I've used the new Chalk Studio II collection, which I just LOVE.  I have a deep love for the chalkboard trend, and I love how this collection pairs it with pink, aqua & yellow.  Those three colors really give the chalkboard elements a much softer feel!

 

Supplies: Chalk Studio II: 6x6 designer paper pad, chipboard, enamel dots, decorative brads,;Now and Then-Izzy:  alpha/word stickers

I love the chipboard elements that are included in this collection, and I used one of the Instax frames to help create the sentiment to my card!  By pairing it with the"You and Me" block & some word stickers...I was able to create a sweet love themed card that could be used for a wedding, anniversary, or any special moment.

When I added the smaller gold banners & the enamel dots, I got the idea to create a matching bookmark.  For one...I am in dire need of a bookmark, and now I have a really pretty one to hold my spot between the pages!!  I kept it in the love theme as well, which would make this little set a nice gift that you could give to someone special.

There are lots of amazing items in the Chalk Studio II collection that make amazing cards, and lots of fun gift ideas!  Your scrapbooking product is a great place to start whenever creating a homemade gift...and this collection is a perfect pick!!

Product Spotlight | Sticky Notes

Good morning! Tonya here today to share with you a couple of projects that feature….STICKY NOTES!!!!! I thought it was super cool when I saw that My Mind's Eye was including this new product with some of their most recent lines (they are included in both of the Now and Then lines: Mildred and Milo). You receive quite a few in a pack which means you can use them for so many things. Use them as you would a normal sticky note, these would just be more fun. They can also be used as embellishments on your projects, or as a mask for misting and inking over.

For my projects today I chose to use them as embellishments for my cards. First up is the card that I made using the Milo collection. I wanted to incorporate all of the "days of the week" sticky notes onto the front of my card.

Mixed Media with Karen | March 2014 Edition

Hi everyone!

This is Karen and I am back with another Mixed Media page. This month, I decided to do something a bit different. Since the beginning of 2014, I've been taking Tam's Life Book class where there's a new mixed media assignment each week. One of the recent assignments, by the amazing Jane Davenport , was to pick three of your positive qualities and create a pop-up. I decided to use that assignment for my Mixed Media with Karen for this month.

The first thing I did was to pick my three qualities and draw three girls that symbolized them. I used the amazing Willow Tree statues as my examples and drew one girl reading, one girl holding a heart, and one
girl with a bird. I first did rough sketches with pencil leaving a half of an inch in the bottom to fold over:

then I went over each of them with a micron 0.005 pen.

I then used watercolors to color my girls:

The next thing I did was to use the same paper in the same size (4x6 in this case) and create three flaps. I then painted the flaps and adhered them to my blank page:

Now it was time to make my page. I took all the 3x4 and 4x6 cards from the Record It! line and pulled out a bunch of them that spoke to me at that moment. I layered them all over my page without thinking too hard
about it. I regularly reminded myself not to think too hard. Here's what I had by that point:

I then took them all off and covered the page with Mod Podge and adhered them all down. At this point, I moved stuff around mostly because I couldn't remember where I had originally put them. I also cut some of
the cards.

For example, I cut out the love circle and the words out of some of the cards and the see through white heart, etc. I added a few bits and pieces of washi tape and layer one was done. The next task was to cut out the flaps I'd adhered. I used an exacto knife to find the seams and cut them. It wasn't super-easy but it also wasn't super-hard.

At this point, it looked like this:

The next thing I did was to glue my girls inside the flaps. At this point, I realized I hadn't thought this through really well and I needed the bottoms of the girls to be longer, so I adhered some more paper to them and painted it black.

I journaled all over the background of each flap on why this quality was important to me. Then I added some paint to the cover page and I was pretty much done. Here is a look with the girls in there:

Product Spotlight | Flair Pins

Hi everyone Laurel here.  I love the new flair pins that coordinate with the collections.  The size of them allow for a great focal point on any project.  I decided to combine them with some of the journaling cards in the kits to create some cards to show how the products are so versatile and go beyond Project LifeⓇ and Layouts.

To create all four of the cards I have mixed and matched Now & Then Dorothy and Milo collections.  On all of the cards I have adhered the Flair pins with some foam squares.

First up is this fun card that I thought would be a good congratulations card for a number of occasions.  I die cut the letters from some Milo pattern paper and used the negative piece.  I then embellished the word with one of the chipboard stars and a word from the letter stickers.  Finally the arrow is an enamel arrow from the Cupid’s Arrow collection.

Next is this fun card to give to a significant other as a just because card.  Don’t we all need these once in awhile.  I love to accent my projects with stitching and in this case I used stitching to highlight the phrase on the journaling card. 

Another fun card for a loved one.  In this case I have adhered one of the enamel hearts from the Now & Then Dorothy collection right onto the Flair Pin, stitched under the phrase on the sticker and finally stapled on the die cut arrow.

Finally, a bit of a twist on the number three.  I created a ‘baby makes 3’ card and once again, have adhered an enamel heart right onto the Flair Pin. 

 

I hope that I have given you some ideas of ways you can use the Flair Pins on your projects.

Flashcard decor

Hello! It's Amber. I hope you are enjoying your Saturday. It's a gorgeous spring morning at my house. Last month my husband and I worked on adding mouldings in my hall! It’s so gorgeous. I just smile when I walk down it. We designed and built the mouldings on the left side a little taller so that I could have a collage wall and so the heads of the tall people that live in and visit my house won’t hit their heads on it.

The mouldings with a picture rail was one of my favorite things about my scrap room in our old house:

I wanted to have a mixture of items on the new picture rail, not just pictures. One day I was cleaning out Riley’s room and noticed the 2 + 2 = 4 flashcard and thought about that flashcard was like our family. Two adults + two boys = our family. I knew I wanted to add that to my gallery wall. Now that my wall was complete, I just needed to decorate so I mounted a few 11 x 14 pictures on foam core and needed one last thing to complete it: my flashcard décor!

Using the ultra fresh and fun My Mind’s Eye Chalk Studio 2, I created this:

 

I love the way the vibrant colors stand out against the chalk background. The embellishments (chalk art hand) are to die for and added such a fun POP to my project.

With the photo collage complete, I smile even more as I walk down the hall. And, with all the time you spend in a hall, shouldn’t it be a fun path to walk?

Anatomy of a Double Page Layout | March 2014

Hello everyone! This is Shelly with a behind the scenes look at the makings of a double page layout.

This month I decided to tackle one of my seasonal summary pages, WINTER! As if we, most of us throughout the U.S. anyway, haven’t had enough winter fun this year already. Am I right!?!

I actually don’t mind winter and snow, but all of these extreme cold days with no school can be over already. I am ready for spring! But I thought I would let the white stuff outside my window inspire me to document last winter’s fun before I start looking onward to the bright bold colors of spring.

I kicked my creative process by drawing my sketch after choosing my pictures. My seasonal summary pages always pack a bunch of pictures. I went with a block of 2x3 photos, a few 3x4, and one 4x6 as my focal point.


I laid out my photos on white cardstock to see how I liked the flow of it all. Sometimes a sketch is good, but seeing the pictures in place sometimes causes things to change. The pictures were a lot busier causing me to change up my path. 

As you can see, I switched up my sketch a little from my initial plan. I decided I liked my son’s half birthday picture tucked behind the strip of focal pictures instead of down at the bottom left. I also ordered a few extra pictures because I was undecided which one I wanted as the focal point of my page, and how many I wanted to tuck behind the horizontal strip of pictures.


To balance out the long horizontal photo strip of focal pictures, I decided to bring a little more weight to the left side of the page with two strips of pattern paper, a few brads/buttons to embellish and create an “attached” look.


To draw my eye across the page and down to the bottom corner, I embellished with the doily accent stickers. I thought they would be a nice “wintery” touch because they reminded me of snowflakes.


For the title, I played around with various patterns, but then ultimately landed with a silver metallic specialty paper inspired by the lovely metallic chevron paper that I used on the top half of my layout. That paper is so pretty isn’t it!? I still kept a touch of pattern with my “i” which also brought that same diagonal stripe from the left side to the right side of my page.


At the top, there was the perfect opportunity to play with some of the new 3x4 cards. I dressed a couple of them up a little. One as a label and the other as a tag, which happens to be one of my favorite things to do with 3x4 cards on my layouts. I cut several of those little tag toppers out with my Silhouette and keep them close by in a small container for easy use.

Using Record It! Cards for Cardmaking

I did Project LifeⓇ  last year but chose not to do it this year so using the Record It collections for something other than Project LifeⓇ  is right up my alley.  I love the sentiments and knew they would make for some beautiful cards.

 

Supplies: Record It- Pretty Things: 6 X 6 pad; Cardstock and Journaling Cards; Cut and Paste- Presh: enamel dots; Misc: Clear Stickers & Doilies: SRM Stickers, Twine: Divine Twine

On this first card  I used one of the 3 X 4 cards as a focus so it made for a quick and easy creation.  I just layered some pattern paper pieces, stitched then adhered a doily.  I tied some twine around the card, adhered it and stitched it down.  Then as a final touch I sprinkled a few enamel dots.

 

Next I chose two of the 3 X 4 cards, angled them at the top of the card base, and adhered. I layered on some pieces of the pattern paper along the bottom then just stitched everything down. I added a clear sticker and tied on some twine.The main cluster of roses has been fussy cut from one of the pattern papers and mounted on foam squares. Finally I just embellished with some enamel dots.

 

For this third card I decided to layer two of the 4 X 6 cards together. I then cut one of the 3 X 4 cards into two pieces and adhered them at the top. I added a clear sticker and doily then just did some random stitching. 

 

Just a note, I always create my card fronts first. When they are complete I then adhere them to a card base.  That way the stitching and stapling does not show on the inside of the card.
