Introducing our May Guest Designer!

 This month we are absolutely thrilled to have Suzy Plantamura joining us. We adore Suzy's whimsical, vibrant, and playful style and we just knew she'd rock the MME.

She didn't disappoint. We are blown away by what Suzy created this month. We know you will be, too. Make sure to leave Suzy some love for her incredible projects!

Suzy's Bio:I’ve been scrapbooking since grade school, so I would rather not say how long that has been! I’ve been in the “scrapbooking industry” for over ten years. I’ve worked for several magazines including Memory Makers and Creating Keepsakes. I’ve also done freelance design work for several manufacturers including MAMBI, Love Elsie, Creative Imaginations, Maya Road, American Crafts, and am currently on the Project Life design team for Studio Calico. I have been spending most of my scrappy time doing project life as I love the way it allows me to document the every day details of our lives. I also love photography and doodling inspirational quotes that I like to include in my scrapbook projects. I live in Southern California with my husband, three kids, and two dogs. One of my favorite lines for years has been My Minds Eye, so I was super excited to be asked to be the guest designer this month!

Q:What did you have the most fun working with?

A:I loved working with all of the products, but my favorite two My Minds Eye products are their washi tape and enamel dots. I use them on everything I make! I really enjoyed mixing all of the lines together for my projects including the new Kate&Co lines and the two Rhonna Farrer lines.

 

Q:What is your favorite mme line of all time, why?

A:It would have to be My Girl because it encompasses all my favorites in scrapping: girly, colorful, happy, whimsical, and playful. I could use it on everything I make!

Suzy says:I’ve had these photos for almost a year, but never had the right products to do them justice. The yellows and grays in the Kate&Co lines were perfect!

I cut six 4” squares and punced 3” circles in the center of each. I printed four photos in 3x3 squares and also punched them into circles. I arranged the six squares in the center of my layout with a title in one, journaling in another, and four photos in the others.

I used vellum and a doily behind the squares to add a softer feel to the layout. The little sticker alpha words were perfect to describe the feelings in each photo! I added my two favorite products – washi tape and enamel dots to finish it off.

 

 

Cleaning Puppy Style layout

 Suzy says:By the time I made this layout, I was out of ideas and creativity! My 22 year old son was in the room and saw a bunch of circles cut from different papers that I kept rearranging on the page trying to figure something out! He said to cut them in pie pieces and arrange them that way – bingo! This layout idea was born! (A why didn’t I think of that moment!).

I cut each circle in eight pie pieces and arranged them randomly into circles. I think this technique really shows off all the pretty paper designs well. Next, I asked my son for a title and he gave me that idea as well. I made it playful by using different colors and styles of letters. S

peaking of my puppy, she has eaten many of my beloved rolls of washi tape! I tried to use a roll that was chewed up and realized I loved the look of the messy edges. I layered two washi’s along the borders of the layout – with puppy teeth marks intact! A big thank you to my son for helping me get over my lack of creative energy slump!

 

 

Take a Picture it Lasts Longer layout

Suzy says:I loved this photo taken at a recent retreat I went to with the design team for Studio Calico. It wasn’t a staged shot – we really were both trying to get a photo of the same thing and just ended up tangled up this way! I wanted to scrap it in a “special” way since it is my favorite photo from the trip. I used my all time favorite line – My Girl – as it is bright, cheerful, and playful...AND the colors matched!

I punched circles out of the 6x6 paper pad and placed them around the photo. I attached them to a piece of vellum and placed that over a piece of white cardstock. I added some more circles, confetti made out of the papers, and sequins between the vellum and cardstock. I closed the seams with washi tape. I’ve seen a lot of confetti pockets made on projects and LOVED them, so I thought it would be fun to make an entire layout that way. You shake it and the confetti goes everywhere. It ended up being a very playful (litterally fun to play with!) layout perfect to remind me of my fun weekend!

Suzy says:When I made the cover for this mini album, my intention was to fill it with pictures. I remembered that I had lots of doodled quotes that needed a home, so I decided to use those in the album instead and changed my title, but left the camera on the front (which now makes no sense – but it was too cute to remove!).

I used Becky Higgins Project Life page protectors (cut to fit) for inserts as well as coin protectors and baseball card holders. I made the front and back covers with chipboard covered with paper. I mixed quite a few lines in this album – some old and some new. I basically used a bit of everything I had made by My Minds Eye – and that was quite a collection!

There are so many fun embellishments to add such as washi, stickers, enamel dots, brads, and chipboard pieces. I loved using up a lot of my stash on this and it all came together perfectly!  

Wow wow WOW Suzy! You went above and beyond for us. Thank you so much for taking the time to lovingly create these projects. We couldn't possibly love them more!

Mini Albums with Monika-Kickin' it Old School!

Hi, I'm Monika and for this month's mini album feature, I'm going to be kickin' it old school. As much as I love the iPhone and my super awesome Mac computer, I continue to keep a paper address book.

And now that my girls are school-aged, they often come home with teeny tiny scraps of paper with names and phone numbers on them and no place to keep them. Knowing that I had already designed address book pages {get your download here} that just happened to be 6x6, I was excited to pull out the Kate & Co. Oxford Lane Paper Pad and get crafty. My youngest LOVES blue, so this range of colors was a perfect fit for her.

It's like I was meant to create an address book...do you see that adorable retro chipboard telephone? Using the negative shape left from the shapes I cut for my inside divider pages, I gave it a bit of dimension and popped it off the cover page with another chipboard element underneath and added those fit-with-everything enamel dots.

DESIGN TIP  |  sandwich a piece of chipboard between your two 6x6 papers to add extra heft and durability to your cover

Since she's seven, I kept it simple and my daughter's address book has just two sections: family and friends. I die cut my bracket shape and adhered it to one of the 6x6 sheets from the designer paper pad, trimmed a label sticker from the sticker accessory sheet then layered decorative buttons before popping on an enamel dot.

The inside front cover has one of the super cute shaped stickers from the sticker accessory sheet. Don't forget the back cover! I like to keep the chipboard natural for the back cover and here I added decorative tape along the spine and at the left edge to add a little interest.

Using 6x6 Paper Pads on Your Layouts

We know that many of you LOVE our 6x6 paper pads. We love them, too. I know that sometimes 6x6 pads are synonymous with "cardmaking" but we love using them on our layouts, too!

Love to See You Smile by Tamara Jensen

Tamara says:When I first saw 6x6 pads a few years ago I thought, "Hmm, what can I use these for?".  Little did I know how amazing and versatile these pads of paper are.  I love using them for mini albums, cards, gift tags, and especially layouts.  Since the patterns are a quarter if the size as 12x12 papers, they work really well for small elements on layouts. I also like working with a smaller 6x6 size, much of the cutting is already done for you.

For this layout, I simply cut 4 pieces of paper from the 6x6 pad to 3"x4" pieces and printed 2 photos the same size.  The smaller patterns are more subtle and complimented these photos perfectly. I cut the "15" from patterned paper

I added a double row of stitching around the border to frame my page.I then adhered a title, chipboard elements, and letter/word stickers to finish my page.

We just celebrated my son's 15th birthday.  I thought the patterns of these papers, looks like a birthday celebration.  I love how Michael wanted a huge slice of watermelon instead of cake for his birthday dinner. My ten year old even carved a happy face in it for him. :)

 

Happy Photo Bombs to You by Tonya Dirk

Tonya says:For the background of this layout I used 4 full sheets from the 6x6 pad, I then used an extra one in a contrasting pattern to place behind my title.

The thing that attracts me to the 6x6 pads is that the papers are the perfect size for running through your die cut machines, which is how I created the little banner strips.

For an extra little bit of detail I adhered a strip of decorative tape across the word 'bombs' and the fussy cut around the edges with my craft knife. I love the little bit of extra visual interest this gave.

Mixed Media with Karen- May Edition

Hi everyone!

This is Karen, back with another Mixed Media with Karen. This month, I was inspired by the lovely hot air balloons in the new Find Your Wings and Fly line. The first thing I did was to take the Sky's the Limit paper and trace one of the balloons onto paper. I didn't worry about making it a super-meticulous job as you can see.

I then used No Limit, Labeled, Floral, and Flowers for You papers, to create my very own hot air balloon.

I then stitched like a madwoman to make sure it really looked like a hot air balloon. I added a few chipboard embellishments and some enamel dots. I then used the sticker accessories and Alpha/Word stickers to put my message on the bottom of the page and stitched all around and this is what I had.

I was finally ready to glue it on to my gratitude journal and add my favorite step: paint. Once I had my way with adding as much paint as I wanted all around, this is what my page ended up with:

Find Your Wings and Fly

Tina says: I am SUPER DUPER excited about this layout!  Okay, I have to confess!  I have a major scrappy crush on this new My Mind's Eye collection, Find Your Wings & Fly.  It is seriously one of my all time favorite collections EVER!  I'm not sure if it's the wonderful patterns on the 12x12 and 6x6 papers, or the timeless, yet fresh and unique designs on the Sticker and Chipboard Accessory sheets, or the amazing color palette throughout the entire collection.  I am IN LOVE!

I was a little nervous when I went 'rummaging' through my photo collection, looking for just the right picture for my layout.  I came across this 'older' picture of myself as a baby, eating PIE!  Guess my love for pie started at an early age.  ;) This was it, this was the one.

Next, I had to decide on what product I wanted to use on my layout.  This was really a tough decision, because my immediate reaction was EVERYTHING!  (hee hee).  When I came to my senses, I was immediately drawn to this fab-u-lous patterned paper.  It was going to be a perfect backdrop for my photo.  I grabbed the Sticker and Chipboard Accessory sheets, my trusty Enamel Dots, and started layering.  Oh yeah, don't forget the AMAZING new Alpha/Word Stickers.  Oh My Word!  LOVE THESE!

I am usually a slower scrapper, but this layout came together so quickly.  I guess it is really easy when you love every.stinkin.piece. of a collection.  :)  This will be one of my 'go to' collections, yet hoarded at the same time.  Y'all know what I mean??

Suzanne says:I really love the carnival feel to this collection. It is so bold with vibrant colors, and is perfect for documenting BIG moments ...and the everyday, too. Here I used it to highlight a sweet photo of my birthday girl's celebration with her friends. I remember how important it was for her to celebrate with old friends.

Here I used the balloon layered sticker right on top of the same image found on the Up & Away 12x12 paper. I added a word sticker to the top of the layered balloon sticker. A final detail I added a bit of string around it.To pull in the big and bold card found at the top of the page, I added smaller cards (from the 6x6 pad) to the left of the page. I. I added a bit more chipboard detail to the right hand bottom of the page to create more movement.  I loved working with this collection, and it is perfect for documenting all types of celebrations!

Decorative Tape on Your Layouts with Ronda

Hi there!  It’s Ronda here with you today to share with you a layout using the new decorative tapes from Kate & Co and Find Your Wings & Fly.  We shared many ideas using decorative tape back in April.  We focused in on non-traditional ways of using it from home décor to gifts.  Today I am focusing in on using on your layouts.

Earlier this month I was at my brother-in-law’s birthday party .  It was just family celebrating with him as he turned another year older.  Adam’s favorite is French Silk Pie so we always celebrate his birthday with pie.  It’s a love that he has passed down to his sons -including his two year old Felix.  I couldn’t help but giggle watching my sweet nephew gobbling down his small slice of pie all on his own. 

We often use decorative tapes to accent a page but what if they become the background of our layouts? On this layout I used all the new sets of tapes in strips to create a stellar backdrop.  I started with the “b” side of the polka paper as it was a nice neutral background.  Then using a stencil and distress ink, I added a light layer of yellow to give it some color.  I stamped some of the dots from the Kate & Co Oxford Lane stamps randomly on the background.  

Then I started layering on the decorative tapes to make a very colorful & cool background.  I began with the blue polka dot tape by cutting it into a herringbone like shape.  To make sure I had it lined up properly, I penciled in two lines matching the width of the tape.  As I cut the shapes out of the tape, I laid them between the lines with just a bit of space between each piece using those pencil lines as guides.  I love the look of the tape cut like this.  To the right of the polka dot tape, I added a single strip of the smaller aqua herringbone and then a trimmed piece of the orange decorative tape.  I like making some of the tapes skinnier to create different widths of tape on my page.

On the left of the polka dot tape, I used a couple more strips of decorative tape.  I placed a lime green strip next to the polka dots and then a grey stripe tape.  I used the same technique with the grey stripe strip as I did with the polka dot tape, first drawing pencil lines to match the width of the tape, cutting it into pieces, and using the lines to guide the spacing.  I trimmed down the aqua polka dot tape to a skinner strip as well.

To ground my photo on the decorative tape background, I cut a piece of patterned paper in a polaroid like shape.  I layered in bits of embellishments (including buttons and enamel dots) along with the “sweet” sticker.  I used pop up adhesive to mount the sticker to give it some dimension.  The polaroid shape was perfect for my title. 

Did you notice the decorative tape along the outside border?  These little stripes of color really added that finishing touch to my page.  I like adding them in small bits so it didn’t take over my page but complimented the background.

Anatomy of a Double Page Layout-Finding Inspiration in a Single Page Sketch

Hello everyone! This is Shelly back with another behind the scenes look at the makings of a double page layout. Last month, I took on the challenge of turning a single page sketch into a double page. After seeing the fabulous May Sketch Challenge from our very own Ronda, I thought I would do it again! Maybe I could inspire some of my fellow Doublers to take on this month’s sketch challenge.


When I see a page or a sketch that inspires me, I grab my notebook to get my own ideas down. The second I saw Ronda’s sketch, I could see two immediate possibilities. I could “stretch the sketch” or “blow up the sketch.” Next step, I search my pictures to see what grabs my attention as the perfect topic for the inspiration piece. I decided a spring summary with lots of pictures was calling my name and would be a perfect fit for the second sketch.

What was so nice about this sketch is that you really could just grab several pictures in various sizes to easily make a collage. After selecting the pictures I wanted to highlight, I picked my focus picture of my daughter riding her bike as the 6x4, picked three other main pictures to be 4x3, and the rest were sized at 3x2. This was easy editing for me. No real thought, because I knew I would just fan them out around the main picture. I almost always have a few extra pictures that I print, but never make the cut onto the final page. Sometimes, they just don’t tell enough of the story or one of the other pictures tells the same story.

With my pictures in front of me, I lay them out using my sketch as a guide. That is when I pull out my pretty papers and select a few that are calling to me for the page. Since it was a spring page, it was only natural to gravitate to some of the vibrate colors from the Collectable Collection.

After pushing the pictures around and playing with pretty papers, this is how it all ended up…

As you can see I kept with the same design, a large focal picture with several smaller rectangles bursting around it. I chose to make those rectangles more pictures, but larger. I like to have my pictures big enough to see what is going on in them. Although it would be fun to use those index prints that you can get with your picture order with this sketch too!

Initially for the background, I had the plan to divide it up into quadrants which was inspired by the stitching in Ronda’s sketch. After looking at it, I thought it would be fun to do a sun burst radiating from the focal picture. I really love this effect! I followed my same process that I did in my very first installment of Anatomy of a Double Page Layout, but this time I went with random widths for each of the rays.

I was also inspired by Ronda’s small strip of decorative tape across her focal picture. I decided to run with that idea, and added a few strips here and there embellished by a few enamel dots. With so much happening on this page already, a colorful burst background with lots of pictures, I chose to go with a tone on tone look. I do tend to do this a lot. It is a fun way to add embellishment to a page without overpowering the entire look of the page.

I moved the title to the side of the page instead of under the focal picture. There was lots of room over there, and I felt that it added some much needed weight. This is where I added a little extra color. I went back and forth about it, but I just love this green polka dot from the Remarkable ‘Smile’ Grin paper that I threw caution to the wind and added a pop of spring green to the page.

Although I love how Ronda had journaling circling her page, I chose to just do a simple strip along the left side of the page. I like to keep my season summary pages short and sweet with just a few simple blurbs of what is going on in the pictures.

So there you have it. Another single page turned into a double page layout. I hope I have inspired some of my fellow Double Lovers to join in on our May Sketch Challenge this month. I can’t wait to see what you all create. Thank you for stopping by today!

May Flowers! Cards by Danni

Good morning, Danni here with you today to share some of the most gorgeous floral patterns in the new Find Your Wings and Fly line.  I created three cards using this line with various stickers, chipboard embellishments, and layered stickers.

 On my first card, Admit One, I wanted to use the gorgeous chipboard floral embellishment, layering it with the chipboard and a ticket cut from Admit One patterned paper, I can not tell you how much I love this paper, it's so fun to layer.

On my second card, Hey There, I wanted to use this beautiful floral chipboard piece, paired with the "Hey There" chipboard.  I didn't want to overwhelm the chipboard pattern so I decided to keep the embellishments to a minimum.

On my third card, Bloom Where You are Planted, the gorgeous Up and Away Layered sticker flower was absolutely gorgeous to embellish a card.  This was a 5 step card and the results look like it took a lot longer, the perfect embellishment!
