Meet Sonia Thomason

Hi everyone, my name is Sonia Thomason and I am incredibly excited to part of the My Mind’s Eye Team for July. I live in Perth, Western Australia with my husband of 16 years, Kym and my gorgeous daughters Alexandra (Alex) who is 6 and Isabella who is 4 years old.

Now my husband is blog shy when it comes to having his photo shown to all and sundry, so you’ll have to believe me that he does exist and helped create our two gorgeous daughters who are the general target of my camera and resulting scrapbook pages. He is very tolerant of my scrapbooking addiction and luckily has a slight golf addiction himself so doesn’t check my ever growing stash of goodies that is threatening to take over the house!

I know I’m not alone when I say I love shopping for new products and tools as much as I enjoy actually scrapbooking with them. My excuse is you can’t have a fat day with patterned paper and you can always find an embellishment to fit – unlike my jeans that never do! So how did I start this fabulously enjoyable creative journey I find myself on? I was invited to a crop party at a friend’s house in 2004 and I went along to have a cup of tea and a bit of a break from being Mom to a 1 year old while having no idea what scrapbooking actually was. I fell in love with what I saw people doing and went hunting the next day for a local scrapbooking store and I haven’t looked back since.

I love the ‘me’ time that scrapbooking gives me. The ability to lose myself in creating something just for the fun of it while at the same time capturing all of these precious memories that we might otherwise forget as time goes by. I have made some fantastic friendships and experienced some wonderful times that I might not have had if I wasn’t involved in this fabulous craft.

The first My Mind’s Eye papers I remember using were from the Bohemia and 29^th Street Market ranges as I loved the vintage feel of them. Since then the ranges that stick in my mind are the Bella Bella range, Bloom & Grow, Love Me Do and the current So Sophie range.

I also find myself using the accessories from the Lush range over and over again - I love the chipboard alphas, brads, jewels and ribbons. If I had to pick a one thing as my favourite right now (which isn’t easy with so much choice!) I’d have to say the So Sophie Charming range. The blues, greens and brown are just so gorgeous to work with and I love all of the wonderful accessories that are in the range.

So here are some of my favourite My Mind’s Eye layouts from the past to the present. It’s amazing how much our styles change over time but that makes it more fun to look back on.

Thank you for sticking with me – I am a bit of a chatterbox at times!! I hope we all have a fabulous July together and I can’t wait to see what’s happening for this month.

Celebrating where we live

What a great time of year!  Anam and Trisha, our girls up North, celebrated Canada Day on July 1.  The rest of us are enjoying celebrating our freedom this weekend.  We are proud of the countries we live in and wanted to share with you what Canada Day and Independence Day mean to us.

We know that many of our readers live outside our two countries.  We would love to hear from ALL our readers where you live and why you are grateful you live there.

4th Parade by Tamara Jensen, Featured collection: So Sophie

I love the 4th of July!  The parades, patriotic colors, fireworks, BBQ's, family, and friends!  For this layout - I had fun digging through my photo archives.  I LOVE this photos of my little ones taken 8 years ago when we lived in Phoenix, Arizona.  We celebrated the 4th of July in the morning (before the heat hit) with a breakfast at the church, patriotic program, and a bike parade for the kids.

The So Sophie Savvy line papers are perfect for summery and 4th of July projects. I had fun mixing supplies from a few lines: journaling circle (inside the metal tag) and letter stickers from Abbey Road, rhinestone strips, velvet and chipboard letters (with Stickles glitter) from Lush.

 

Patriotic by Jana Eubank, Featured Collection: So Sophie

We love to go to the 4th of July parades each year as a family.  It is a great time to reflect on how blessed we are to live where we do, to enjoy the freedoms we enjoy, and pay tribute to those who serve our country.  I always get teary-eyed whenever I see my kids put their hands over their hearts to show respect for our country's flag. Saluting the flag at the beginning of the parade is my favorite part!

I used a mixture So Sophie's Charming, Savvy, and Graceful collections to obtain the red, white, blue, navy, and gold color scheme for this page. The Lush brads and gems add the perfect amount of sparkle as a finishing touch.

Happy Birthday, America!

 

Free 2 Run by Amber Packer, Featured Collection: Lush Red and Blue

I prefer to sleep in on holidays.  To me, that’s part of the celebration.  I am quickly changing my tune, however as my sons and husband enjoy running so much.  The first race the boys ran was a local 1K (just over 1/2 mile) three years ago.  The kids get a t-shirt, a popsicle and a medal!  They were hooked.  So hooked that last year when Neal wanted to run the 5K, he also chose to run the 1K as well because an 8 year old running the 5K won’t get a medal, but he gets a medal for running the 1K.  He’ll be running both again this year.  It is so much fun watching them train hard to prepare and plan the races they will run in the future.  I am glad we live in a country where you can accomplish anything you set your mind on. 

And I gladly give up sleeping in to see the joy on their faces at their accomplishments.
